Is stress causing your acne?

12 May

I have a little story to share with you–one that started about 6 months ago. Starting around November last fall I had a number of circumstances that were causing me a lot stress. I was maintaining my current workload while taking on more work and new challenges. I would experience prolonged episodes of stress– to the point where my chest would constrict, breathing would get heavy, and it could take up to an hour for symptoms to subside. If anyone has experienced this before, you know that symptoms can persist well after the stress trigger has past; leaving the body to constantly pump out stress hormones (epinephrine and cortisol) which in any normal ‘fight or flight’ situation allows your body to function optimally. For me, my body had become so accustomed to this state of stress that any minor daily occurrence could trigger symptoms at any time during the day.

If you are finding that you have persistent breakouts (especially painful cysts along your jaw), you are eating a ‘clean’ diet (low in processed foods and high in plants),  and you are using all natural products, than you may want to take a look at your stress level and investigate how it’s affecting your hormones.

Acne affects both our mental and physical state and it takes a lot of patience and self love to heal. After many weeks of anxiety and frustration over what I saw in the mirror, and having no other ‘remedies’ left in my arsenal to try, I finally went to visit a naturopathic doctor.

My doctor confirmed what I had already suspected: my body’s chronic state of stress had affected my hormones (which are  triggers for acne). I would do a great disservice to the workings of the body and to the medical field if I were to try and expand on the details of this exchange. What I can say though is this: of all of the terrible effects we know stress has on our bodies, hormone imbalance is one of them and it takes a lot of patience and the proper healing supplements to reverse its affects.

Estrosense, supplement for hormone balance

EstroSense, supplement for hormone balance

I was prescribed the following supplements for my treatment plan:

  • Daily high does of EPA (fish oil) with primrose and borage oil
  • EstroSense – this is not a hormone replacer but contains Indole 3 Carbinol which is a compound found in cruciferous vegetables and aids the body’s hormone metabolizing function
  • RelaxMax – this is a neurotransmitter and hormone support supplement that helps the body stand up to stress

****This is what was prescribed for me based on my body, diet, and symptoms, but please speak to someone before spending money and taking supplements that may not work or may not be right for your body. ****

I have begun to see improvements since starting this treatment plan, and I will certainly keep you updated on how it goes.

I want to give people hope when it comes to acne. Most often than not, it is our body’s way of telling us that something is not right internally and we need to heal it gently. . . not wage war with harsh chemicals and drugs.

Be well xx

3 simple ways to kick start your skincare routine

18 Feb

Are you someone who never devotes time to a skincare routine because you think that it takes too much time, or costs too much money? Maybe you know someone who thinks this way (if so, share this post). Your skin does not have to suffer as a result of your schedule. Here are 3 simple things that you can do to kick start your skincare routine to make it more effective in no time, and at no cost!

Kick start your skincare routine

Give your skincare a kick start!

1. Quit washing your face in the morning. If your face is always tight after washing and you deal with dry skin but don’t have time to find a new moisturizer or cleanser, try washing only at night and see how your face oils balance out. Alternatively, if your skin is extremely oily, try this as well! You may be over washing which can cause your skin to produce more oils to compensate for what you are scrubbing away. Instead of cleanser in the morning, just splash a little water on your face and apply a moisturizer as usual.

2. Sprinkle a little baking soda in your cleanser. If you don’t have time to go searching for an exfoliator, or don’t want that extra step, trusty baking soda can act as an excellent gentle scrub. Don’t even own a cleanser? Add a splash of water instead (enough to make a paste with the baking soda). You can do this nightly, or 2-3 times per week.

3. Apply moisturizer on damp skin. When moisturizer is applied to damp skin it helps to trap water on surface cells and acts as a barrier for moisture loss. Thus making your moisturizer more effective without even having to switch it!

Lessons from Rose-Marie Swift

1 Dec

A few weeks ago at Husk , I had the opportunity to meet makeup artist and RMS Beauty creator, Rose-Marie Swift. Needless to say, I was very excited! Ever since RMS products became available in Toronto, I have become somewhat of a devout user. It’s all about the creamy texture and silky smooth application.

With Rose-Marie Swift at Husk

Naturally, I would like to believe that Rose-Marie Swift had me in mind when she created her line. Okay, maybe not ME specifically, but after overcoming health problems as a result of years working with chemical makeup (lead, mercury, and cadmium had actually accumulated in her body!), she created RMS as a way for women to “claim their right to healthy beauty”. RMS products are made with nutrient dense food- grade ingredients, like coconut oil and cocoa butter, that nourish and heal the skin.

RMS beauty products are made with pure and natural ingredients including coconut oil, cocoa butter, jojoba oil, rosehip oil, and essential oils

When Rose-Marie sat me down for the makeup application I didn’t realize how much I would learn.  The Husk staff and I were mesmerized by everything she said; de-bunking age-old makeup myths, and explaining how to use her products in the most optimal way. It’s not everyday that you get to learn how to use products in the same way that the creator intended.

Getting some wise beauty advice from Rose-Marie Swift

Now, unfortunately I can’t write about everything I learned, (there was just too much!), but I will share one beautiful tip.

The “un” cover-up was my first RMS purchase. At the time, I was looking for a product for my ever-present under eye circles. Ever since using it, the product has worked ‘okay’, but not magically (as I had hoped). I have always thought that the lightest shade ’11’ was a bit too dark, and instead, I wanted something lighter to brighten up the eye area. Well, let’s just say I got a verbal slap on the hand for that opinion. Turns out using a cover-up that is ‘too light’ is a very outdated look and should remain with Kim Kardashian. Instead, lightly apply RMS living luminizer  underneath the eye before the “un” cover-up and, voila! no more dark circles!

Bye-bye dark circles!

Rose-Marie also dished that she was launching a new cover-up palette in salmon shades. Despite my disbelief, these pinkish hues offset the grey and brighten the whole under-eye. Until that comes out, she told me to mix a touch of the lip2cheek  in Smile with the “un” cover- up to get the same effect. Perfection!
