DIY Holiday: Gift Wrapping and Body Butter Bars

11 Dec
DIY Holiday Gifts

Body butter bars are molded into the shape of candies, wrapped in shiny tissue paper, and packaged in a Christmas cracker

Sometimes the gift wrapping is better than the actual gift. . . sometimes. In this case I would say it is equally as good. A few week ago I hosted a natural beauty workshop where I showed the participants how to make body butter bars. This recipe is so simple and versatile that I thought I would share it with you and show you how to make it into great holiday gifts!

Body Butter Bars:

50 g beeswax

50 g cocoa butter

50 ml olive oil (can be substituted for any oil)

2-3 drops of vitamin E oil (optional)

10-15 drops of essential oils (I love lavender and vanilla)

1. In a double boiler melt beeswax and cocoa butter. Add olive oil and heat on low until mixture is liquid.

2. Take off of heat, add essential oils and whisk in vitamin E oil (optional)

3. Pour in ice cube trays or (molds of choice) and let harden for 30-60 minutes.

These body butter bars are made using mini soap molds

For wrapping you will need:

– toilet paper rolls

– shiny wrapping paper

– tissue paper

– ribbon

– glue

Wrapping paper, ribbon, tissue paper

1. Cut, and glue wrapping paper around the toilet paper roll, cropping paper so that it is flush with the ends.

2. Next, cut tissue paper so that it is about double the length of the toilet paper roll. Roll paper lengthwise and insert into the toilet paper roll. You may wish to dab a little glue on the inside of the roll so that the tissue paper says in place.

3. Insert the body butter bars or other gifts into the roll. Fasten each end with ribbon, and voila! Gift wrap complete!

Body Butter, Candy, Lip Balm

Candy wrapped body butter and lip balm sticks are the perfect size to fit into the Christmas crackers

Tips: use a mini muffin tin as a mold to make round candy- shaped body butter disks. You can use the same body butter recipe to make lip balm sticks. Just use peppermint essential oil (instead of other fragrances) and pour into empty lip balm tubes.

Happy Holiday crafting! What DIY gifts are you making this year?

Eco gifts for any occasion

18 Nov

The holiday season is upon us (according to retailers at least), but sweet little gifts don’t need to be reserved only for special occasions. I thought I would share a few things that I have been given over the course of the fall that are perfect for treating yourself, or that eco conscious green beauty (and beau) in your life.

Eco Gift Idea

(Clockwise from left) La Bella Figura Daily Elements Defense Face Oil, Juniper Ridge Cedar Soap, Lavender in a Bag, Soi Green Tea Candle

1. Juniper Ridge wild harvested organic soap: For those who love the outdoors but may be stuck in a concrete jungle, Juniper Ridge products are for you. This company quite literally harvests and bottles the wild scents of the west coast mountains, forests, and deserts from their lab (or more accurately field tents) and turns them into intoxicating smelling soaps, colognes, incense, and room sprays. Personally I am looking forward to trying their Douglas Fir Campfire incense to go along with my fireplace channel. (We can’t all have the luxury of a roaring fireplace in a mountain lodge!)

2. Lavender in a bag: Take advantage of this super easy way to grow your own lavender, no pot (or garden) necessary. I had all good intention of growing lavender this summer in my own garden but now that it’s getting cold, I have to thank a dear friend for giving me this lovely gift and a second chance to redeem my lazy gardening skills.

3. Soi Candles: I used to love going into candle stores and smelling every single one until I passed out. Now, really can’t stand the strong synthetic scents of most candles, and so, I was happy to find these all- natural scented soy ones that also double as a skin moisturizer. (I know, crazy right?) The wax never gets hot, so you can safety put it on your skin without getting burned.

4. La Bella Figura: This little bottle of Daily Elements Defense face oil is the cutest thing that I have ever seen (declaimer, I do have a stronger than normal love for mini things). I was given this bottle the last time La Bella Figura was in town, and I cannot get enough. The lightweight oil smells amazing and leaves my skin feeling smooth and hydrated. Good news!  They just launched their limited edition Holiday Essential Mini Set, and so La Bella Figura products (in adorable little bottles) can be yours for your next trip across the globe. I love stashing mine in my gym bag to slather all over my face after the steam room.

What are gifts are you sharing with your loved ones these days? Already shopping for the Holidays? What’s on the list?

Holiday DIY Beauty Gifts

Pssst!! We have moved Oceans & Potions has gotten a new name and facelift! For more DIY beauty recipes and more great content visit us at the new site elodiebeauty.com

As the Holidays draw near and the frantic shopping ceases to let up, think about giving a gift that will pamper, relax and restore your dearest loved ones.

I have put together a selection of my favourite DIY beauty care products that are extremely easy to make and are as luxurious as they sound.

Using a little creativity (and shiny paper), you can put together beautiful packages that are eco chic and 100 percent natural!

Get Pampered this winter with luxurious skin care

In the ‘Pampering Body Care Gift Set’ I included:

  • Whipped Body Butter
  • Relaxing Bath Salts
  • Bamboo dry brush
Pampering Body Care Set

Pampering Body Care Set

Whipped Body Butter

  • 1 cup shea butter
  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • ½ cup sweet almond oil
  • 10 drops of essential oil (I used lavender)

Method: Using a double boiler, melt shea butter and coconut oil together. Once melted, take off of heat, add sweet almond oil and essential oil. Let cool until a crust starts to form on top of the oil mixture (the oils must be partially solid before the next step). Whip mixture on high until it reaches a stiff peak (this may take up to 5-7 minutes). Scoop into sterile jars and store in a cool spot.

Relaxing Bath Salts

  • 4 cups epsom salts
  • 2 cups sea salt
  • ½ cup sweet almond oil
  • 10 drops of peppermint essential oil
  • 10 drops of rosemary essential oil
  • 1-2 tsp of dried rosemary

Method: Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Distribute into glass jars. Relax and enjoy!

Give the gift of great hair

In the ‘Hair Essentials Gift Set’ I included:

  • Balancing Dry Shampoo
  • Lavender and Rosemary Hot Oil Treatment

Add a natural bristle hairbrush or bamboo wide- tooth comb for an extra special touch

Hair Essentials Gift Set

Balancing Dry Shampoo

  • 1 ½ Tbsp colloidal oatmeal
  • 1 Tbsp corn starch
  • 1 Tbs baking soda
  • 5-10 drops of essential oil (I use mint and rosemary, or lavender and rosemary)

Method: Combine all ingredients to a uniform mixture. Use a funnel and divide mixture into saltshakers. If giving as a gift, place a piece of tape over the holes to prevent losing any mixture. When ready to use, shake a small amount onto hair roots and massage into scalp. Massage well to absorb hair oils and prevent the ‘white powder’ look.

Rosemary & Mint Dry Shampoo

Rosemary & Mint Dry Shampoo

Luxurious Hot Oil Hair Treatment

  • ½ cup of sweet almond oil (or jojoba oil)
  • 5 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops of rosemary essential oil

Method: Mix all oils in a glass bottle and shake or stir well. When ready to use, heat oil in a water bath. Pour 3-5Tbs of oil in a glass measuring cup. Immerse the measuring cup in a large bowl with hot water. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until oil is warm. Evenly distribute oil onto dry hair, wrap hair in a hot towel and leave on for 20-30 minutes. Shampoo and condition as usual.
