My Simplified Skincare Routine

28 Jan

Hi Lovely Readers,

As you know I spend a lot of time talking about products and beauty routines, but I have never really delved into my own daily rituals. I wanted to share with you a very simplified version.

I love so many different brands and I incorporate them into my routine depending on my skin’s needs or my mood. That said, the foundation of my skincare regime is based solely on readily available, raw ingredients. This (I must confess) is because I have a fear.

I am afraid that I will get stuck using a specific product that I cannot live without; I will move somewhere where they don’t carry it, or it will be discontinued. I don’t like to rely sooo heavily on something that my routine is not sustainable. I know. . . perhaps I’m being a bit dramatic, but I actually maintain this philosophy throughout my entire life, especially with food. When you learn to create things for yourself, you never have to go without.

Skincare, oil cleansing method

Simplified skincare: sea buckthorn berry oil, raw honey, rose water, coconut & castor oil blend.

So as I said, I have crafted my skincare routine based on single ingredients. Even if I cannot find a certain brand or product, I can always choose another one that I trust based on its primary ingredients.

My skin care routine consists of the following:

  • virgin, cold pressed coconut oil
  • castor oil
  • raw honey
  • rose water
  • cold pressed rosehip oil/ and or sea buckthorn berry oil.

  1. I start by using what is affectionately known as the ‘oil cleansing method’. I will let you read about it here. It uses oil and steam to draw out oil and other impurities (using the simple rule that oil attracts oil). I cleanse using my own oil blend and a microfiber cloth.  The blend can differ depending on individual skin needs; since I have dry skin with the tendency to break out, I use 3:1 coconut oil to castor oil. Also, depending on the season I may follow this up by washing with a gentle cleanser (borrowing One Love Organics’ fantastic ‘double cleansing‘ method).
  2. Next, I spritz my face with rose water which helps prepare my skin to absorb more moisture (for the same reason why a wet sponge absorbs more water than a dry one).
  3. On damp skin I slather a rosehip or sea buckthorn berry oil. These are my favourites since they act to reduce inflammation and skin pigmentation, heal scars, and are high in fatty acids (if I am really dry, I will use a moisturizer before I put on the oil, currently I am using Holistic Vanity’s Brightening Hyaluronic Lotion).
This polar vortex is wrecking havok on my skin!

This polar vortex is wreaking havoc on my skin and it is in need of some serious moisture!

  1. I wash only with water (my skin is more balanced without a second wash- I highly recommend trying this!), but if I am feeling oily or a little off-balance, I will wash with raw honey. I first wet my face and then massage a small amount on skin. I will sometimes let it sit for a few minutes and then rinse it off. Raw honey is naturally antibacterial, yet gentle and will not strip your skin (note: pasteurized honey is not as effective).
  2. Next up, a spray of rose water.
  3. All followed with a moisturizer (I leave the oil for night, unless I am feeling particularly dry).

Et, voilà! There you have it lovelies, my simplified skincare routine. I always add things here and there, and change it up depending on the season, but I really love using raw ingredients and seeing what magic they can do on my skin without any assistance from chemists or labs.

5 New Year’s Resolutions for your Beauty Regime: Part 1

16 Jan

Hello Lovely Readers!

Now that we have all adjusted to this brand new year (hopefully), I figured it is a good time to throw some NEW resolutions your way ( just in case you need more on your plate) 🙂

Resolve to make some changing this year!

Resolve to make some changes this year!

Last Saturday while enjoying my favourite ritual of cozying up in bed with a hot beverage to read the weekend paper, I came across an article entitled, “Beautiful Resolutions” . The article offered 5 simple changes that can freshen up any beauty regime, perfect I thought! Except one problem: for people like you and me who stick to the pure and natural, most of the product suggestions fall a bit short.

And so. . . I bring you an annotated version with my own natural suggestions.

This is part one (I don’t want to throw too much at you at once!).

1. Purge Some Products

The article states:

“When cosmetics age, the preservatives wear off and bacteria, ranging from colonies of dirt to infection-causing microorganisms, invade. ”

I totally agree. This is especially important when using all natural products since they do not contain synthetic preservatives. I provided some tips and a helpful link in a previous post.

2. Leave the House Naked

Obviously we’re not talking about clothing here…

The article states:

The “au natural” look is showing up on many 2014 runways, “makeup artist Tom Pecheux for Balmain epitomized the trend, which is as much about skin care as it is about minimal makeup use.”

I love this suggestion! Focusing on skincare, rather than makeup, can make you look even more radiant (since it’s your skin that glows, and not just your bronzer!) To go “au natural”  having well-moisturized skin is key. For this, the article suggests adding a hydrating gel to your regime and applying it under your moisturizer. I suggest, rather than using a paraben-ladden gel, use a plant- based serum that will act like a skin multi-vitamin and help prep it to receive more moisture.

Try  One Love Organics’ Morning Glory full of stimulating rasberry leaf and anti-inflammatory peppermint and lemon balm or, Pure + Simple’s Vitamin C Serum formulated with algae and Vitamin A, E, & C to assist skin immunity and aid in cell regeneration.

If you need added coverage (I know, it’s scary for some to think about ever leaving the house with nothing but a moisturizer), the article suggests using a CC cream to even out the skin tone. I recommend staying away from CC (colour correcting) or BB (beauty balm, or blemish balm) creams which toute their blemish fighting, sun protecting, and complexion smoothing properties. Unfortunately they often contain chemical SPF, drying salicylic acid, and synthetic preservatives.

Instead try an an antioxidant, non-clogging, mineral- based tinted moisturizer like Eminence Organics with an SPF 25. I have raved about this product before, and I will continue to since it leaves the skin feeling light, looking dewy, and smells amazing!

Let that skin shine like the sun!

Next up the article suggests, “Blend a de-puffing, dark-circle-erasing eye cream around the contour of your eyes before applying a spot corrector where needed.”

Try 100% Pure’s Organic Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream, which has received rave reviews. The cream is formulated with caffeine from green tea and coffee that offers anti-inflammatory benefits, and de-puffs the eye area while increasing circulation to brighten dark circles.

For a spot corrector try, RMS Beauty’s “Un” Cover-Up (again, one of my favourites). It does the trick for spot treatment, brightening the under-eye, or for any light coverage. The creamy texture will leave you feeling like you have nothing on at all!

Finally, finish off with a nourishing lip conditioner for a healthy radiant look. Maybe even try making your own using my lip butter recipe!

Stay tuned for Part 2 and 3  of more fabulous new year beauty resolutions!

Inside Seanna’s Makeup Bag (Spring Edition)

9 Apr

I often wonder how other modern-day women keep themselves looking “flirty and fresh” and will always jump at the chance to swap beauty secrets. . . or even take a peek in their makeup bags!

In the spirit of sharing, here’s a glance at mine:

Sparse, right? Well, for someone who claims to love cosmetics and makeup trends as I do, I like to keep it simple –particularly as the weather gets warm.

Just like a closet, it’s important to clean up our makeup bags and change as the seasons do. For two reasons: first, who wants to be lugging around last season’s colours?  Secondly, makeup expires and collects bacteria! Ditch the old and while you are at it, clean those makeup brushes! Not sure how long to keep your makeup? Check out makeup expiration dates here.

So, perhaps the best kept secret is to maintain a tidy makeup bag; ensuring you are only keeping the essentials handy, all the while lightening your load. I like to choose one or two hot seasonal looks and go with it.

My inspiration this spring is a natural, almost bare, makeup look with bold lips and a dewy finish.

(Top left going counter clockwise)

Pure and Simple All Natural Sunscreen, SPF 30 for sensitive skin– A great micronized mineral sun block with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that act as a physical barrier to the sun’s rays. It dries matte, does not leave a white residue (thanks to the micronization of minerals), and can be worn easily under makeup. This formula also contains chamomile to soothe any skin irritations.

Eminence Tinted Moisturizer, Vanilla Latte– This tinted moisturizer gives a great dewy look with just a hint of colour, which works well to even out the complexion. This formula contains SPF 25 which I wear in addition to my SPF 30. It might sound like overkill, but the actual amount of suncreen, or a product with an SPF, that we apply onto our skin is not usually the recommended amount which was used when the manufacturer was calculating  the SPF factor. The amount of tinted moisturizer I actually wear (which is one or two pumps) gives me sun coverage for a lot less time than what is expected out of an SPF 25.

100% Pure Fruit pigmented mascara, Black Tea-Lately I have been all about bare eyes with just a coat of mascara. This one is great for just that, and is ultra lengthening.

RMS Un-Cover Up, #11-This product has been all the rage lately and Rose- Marie Swift, its founder, has gained quite the following. All with good reason. The creamy texture, made with coconut oil is perfect to hide dark circles or blemishes without a chalky or dry look. It covers well, blends beautifully, and moisturizes-  all without covering up the skin’s natural appearance.

RMS Lip2Cheek,Smile’– I love any product that lets me multitask. I pat this lovely pink/coral colour on my cheeks (with my fingers!) and dab it on my lips at the same time. Like the Un-Cover Up, it is made with coconut oil and is ultra moisturizing. Since it is so creamy, the pigment is quite subtle but still leaves a rosy glow.

Bite Beauty Luminous Cream Lipstick, custom colour– Bite is a fantastic Toronto company and is sold exclusively at Sephora. It makes highly pigmented lipsticks (and glosses!) that are so creamy and moisturizing. . . see the theme here? This colour is ‘White Zinfandel’, a bold pink/magenta, which was custom blended by Bite at its Sephora launch.

Eco Tools makeup brushes- I regularly use the concealer and foundation brushes to blend in my ‘Un-Cover Up’. The bristles are made of synthetic taklon and have handles made of bamboo and recycled aluminum ferrules. They are high performing and super soft!

Bite Beauty Superfruit Butter Acai Lip Treatment– To keep my lips soft and conditioned, I apply this treatment before my lipstick. I also always have my own lip butter on hand.

Ilia Illuminator, Polka Dot & Moonbeams (Not pictured here)– This easy- to- apply stick is great for a quick luminous glow. I swipe this over my cheek bones, dab a little on my brow bones, and a bit in the corners of my eyes.

As you can see, it’s no secret – I keep my makeup bag trim by using multi-purpose products. I love anything that saves time and space. I also love products that are ultra moisturizing and give me a radiant glow, with a bold pop of colour on my lips!

Happy Spring Cleaning!
